  • Bias, LF and HF EQ, and Hiss
  • All analog—no latency or digital conversions
  • User-installable upgrade cards
  • Standard 2U rack format

The ATS-Analog Tape Simulator uses the revolutionary AnaMod Process™ for modeling complex analog circuitry entirely in the analog domain. Specially developed analog building blocks are coded to replicate the behavior of analog tape.

Unlike digital plug-ins or processor-based outboard gear, there is no latency, and no A/D or D/A conversions to compromise the sound. The result is a faithful recreation of the original response, without using the original analog hardware.

All of the important features of a two-track analog tape machine are found in the ATS-1, including speed selection, bias, LF Record and HF Repro EQ, and the option of adding tape hiss, if desired. The reference Record level, as indicated on the illuminated VU meters, can be adjusted from 0 to +12 dBu in 3 dB increments.

The ATS-1 accurately models the behavior of specific tape machines and tape formulations, and allows the user to select from up to four machine and tape types. The unit ships with two tape machine cards (M-800 and M-79) and two tape formulation cards (T-GP9 and T-456). Optional machine and tape types are available on easy-to-install cards.

AnaMod ATS-1 Features

  • Record enables the ATS-1 tape simulation.
  • Stop places the ATS-1 into hard bypass.
  • Input sets input gain adjustable from -12 dB to +18 dB.
  • Output sets output gain adjustable from -12 dB to +18 dB.
  • Machine Type selects one of four possible tape machine simulations determined by the SIMM cards installed in slots 1-4.
  • Tape Formulation selects one of four possible tape simulations determined by the SIMM cards installed in slots A-D.
  • Speed selects 7.5, 15 or 30 ips operation.
  • Bias sets the effective bias level in the record circuit. The center postion is the standard bias for each tape formulation.
  • LF Record adjusts the low frequency EQ in the record circuit. The center postion is standard alignment.
  • HF Repro adjusts the high frequency EQ in the playback circuit. The center postion is standard alignment.
  • Ref. Level sets the reference level of the VU meter from 0 dB (+4 dBu) to +12 dB in 3 dB increments.
  • Hiss can be set from off to way too much.

Praise

“The AnaMod ATS-1 impressed me very much. The processing ranges from very subtle and realistic (representing the very best that perfectly set-up tape recorders can offer) all the way to blatant, in-your-face tape warming and gross saturation effects. The subtle addition of hiss adds enormously to the realism (which surprised me), and the often very subtle tonal shaping afforded by the bias, EQ and speed controls is useful, once familiar, as is the choice of tape speed.” —Hugh Robjohns, Sound on Sound Magazine
